“Adelante” by Marisela L. Garza

Everyday I get up

And breathe.

In and out,

Out and in.

I breathe.

I work.

I struggle.

I live.

And all I do,

I do for you.

Mi familia.

Mi gente.

Mi Corazon.

Para mis antepasados,

For those who came before me

But never left me

Cuz their sangre runs through me,

In each beat,

After beat,

After beat.

The rhythm of my soul

sways freely

because la fuerza of a movement that never died

propels me.

Forward.

You are the true pillars of la tierra

Bronze tinted souls

Pushed back

And birthed generations

Of fighters

and you lift us up,

on the backs of your triumphs.

All I do,

I do for you.

Because when I show you love,

I engage in self-love.

And through you,

I’ve inherited more than trauma,

But knowledge, resilience, amor, and resistance.

Greater than destiny,

We are your manifestation.

I

am your manifestation.

And all I do,

I do for you.

I live,

In the name of you.

And when I feel like I can’t go on,

I endure

Because I invoke you.

And I hear you in my dreams

Whispering me awake,

Adelante, mija, adelante.
